{"id":18290,"date":"2021-08-09T15:39:31","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T15:39:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2021\/08\/09\/you-cant-have-fires-on-boats-navy-research-on-safer-zinc-batteries-moves-forward\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:58:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:58:47","slug":"you-cant-have-fires-on-boats-navy-research-on-safer-zinc-batteries-moves-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/it-networks-battlefield-tech\/2021\/08\/09\/you-cant-have-fires-on-boats-navy-research-on-safer-zinc-batteries-moves-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018You can\u2019t have fires on boats\u2019: Navy research on safer zinc batteries moves forward"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory is exploring future potential uses for its zinc-based batteries that provide a safer, reusable alternative to other types of batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In particular, the zinc-based batteries would provide the Navy an option instead of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that are fire prone and struggle to gain safety approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lab\u2019s battery, moving out of technology readiness level one, uses a 3-D sponge of the metal, making the battery rechargeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re starting to move out of the really fundamental chemistry portion of it and moving towards, \u2018OK, can we make devices? Can we have applications that need specific current or voltage? And then can we design batteries specifically for that? So that starts to move us up the manufacturability- and technology-readiness level into things that are either being tested or deployed,\u201d said Ryan DeBlock, a researcher with the surface chemistry division at U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sponge, a \u201cporous network of metallic zinc,\u201d is only 30 to 40 percent dense, according to DeBlock, who spoke with C4ISRNET at the Navy League\u2019s Sea-Air-Space conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"760\" height=\"623\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/NRL-Zinc-sponge.tif_.jpg\" alt=\"Navy zinc sponge for batteries\" class=\"wp-image-55383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/NRL-Zinc-sponge.tif_.jpg 760w, https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/NRL-Zinc-sponge.tif_.jpg?resize=300,246 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Naval Research Laboratory is developing a zinc battery that is not fire prone like some lithium batteries. (Naval Research Lab)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat this does is it takes the current that you\u2019re applying to the battery, and instead of spreading it on a flat surface, you\u2019re spreading out all over that internal sponge area,\u201d he said. \u201cThis allows us to actually use the zinc batteries in a rechargeable way instead of a one-and-done like a AA battery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The zinc-based batteries have several advantages, he said. Zinc is inexpensive and widely available, so the batteries cost less and don\u2019t rely on more complex regional supply chains, whereas the lithium for lithium-ion batteries is sourced largely from South America. Another major advantage is that the research lab\u2019s battery isn\u2019t flammable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can\u2019t have fires on boats or in subs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The zinc batteries are far more environmentally friendly than lead and can provide \u201ca lot more energy\u201d per weight or volume, DeBlock said.
