{"id":38484,"date":"2026-07-02T15:37:04","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T15:37:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/uncategorized\/2026\/07\/02\/us-navy-seeks-to-boost-production-of-new-anti-radar-missile\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:37:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:37:34","slug":"us-navy-seeks-to-boost-production-of-new-anti-radar-missile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/2026\/07\/02\/us-navy-seeks-to-boost-production-of-new-anti-radar-missile\/","title":{"rendered":"US Navy seeks to boost production of new anti-radar missile"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Navy\u2019s appetite for next-generation anti-radar missiles is growing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Naval Air Systems Command <a href=\"https:\/\/sam.gov\/workspace\/contract\/opp\/a7924f609bde4301b72ac3badeb77c66\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\"><u>Request For Information<\/u><\/a> posted on July 1 is asking industry whether it is capable of supplying up to 600 Advanced Emission Suppression Missiles per year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February \u2014 before the Iran War and the consequent guided missile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/25\/us\/politics\/us-military-weapons-shortage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\"><u>shortage<\/u><\/a> \u2014 NAVAIR posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2026\/02\/19\/navy-seeks-new-anti-radar-missile-compatible-with-f-18-f-35-aircraft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\"><u>Sources Sought notice<\/u><\/a> that stated \u201cproduction demand is expected to be on the order of up to 300 [all up rounds] per year.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new RFI asks for a \u201cmature design\u201d of at least technological readiness stage 6 \u2014 the fully functional prototype stage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe U.S. Navy is seeking to enhance its capabilities to suppress and neutralize enemy air defenses in contested environments,\u201d the RFI said. \u201cThis effort aims to identify and potentially acquire a weapon system focusing on extended range, advanced targeting, counter-countermeasures, and integration with existing and future platforms.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both the RFI and the earlier Sources Sought share some details. The Navy wants an \u201cadvanced anti-radiation seeker with broad frequency coverage\u201d and the \u201cability to target modern and advanced radar systems.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AESM should be compatible with the F\/A-18 E\/F and the EA-18G, as well as being capable of mounting internally and externally on the F-35. It should also require minimal maintenance, and have at least a 15-year service life and more than 500 captive carriage flight hours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the RFI does not include several specifications contained in the Sources Sought. In particular, the Sources Sought asked companies to \u201cdescribe ability to engage air-to-air and air-to-ground targets.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The RFI doesn\u2019t mention an air-to-air capability for the AESM. Nor does it repeat the Sources Sought call for an anti-radiation missile \u201cwith a longer range than existing in the Navy\u2019s current inventory.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy\u2019s existing anti-radar missile, the 1980s AGM-88 High Speed Anti-Radiation Missile, or HARM, has a range of up to 80 miles, depending on the launch aircraft\u2019s altitude. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AGM-88G Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile Extended Range, or AARGM-ER, has a longer range. But amid development delays \u2014 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/assets\/gao-25-107569.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\"><u>problems<\/u><\/a> with the rocket motor and software \u2014 the Navy has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navalnews.com\/event-news\/sea-air-space-2026\/2026\/04\/u-s-navys-new-anti-radar-missile-to-suffer-strategic-pause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\"><u>paused procurement<\/u><\/a> for the AGM-88G, with limited procurement set to resume in Fiscal Year 2028. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. has sent HARMs to Ukraine for use against Russian air defense radars. However, the Ukrainians are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.defence-ua.com\/analysis\/why_ukrainian_strike_drones_are_replacing_agm_88_harm_against_russian_skvp_and_garmon_radars-17031.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\"><u>replacing<\/u><\/a> them with domestically produced attack drones, perhaps out of concern over the limited number of HARMs received.
