Kate Fleeger, the helicopter\u2019s program manager, on Tuesday at the Navy League\u2019s Sea-Air-Space conference in National Harbor, Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same conference in 2023, Fleeger said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2023\/04\/05\/heavy-lift-helo-program-prepping-for-2025-first-deployment\/\">the Corps planned to deploy the King Stallion<\/a> with a Marine expeditionary unit in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Marine Corps has adjusted how many heavy-lift helicopter squadrons it anticipates having on the East Coast, Fleeger said Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps\u2019 previous plan had been to deactivate Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464, keeping Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461, but now the plan is for both North Carolina-based squadrons to remain in the fleet, according to the colonel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before sending the helicopters abroad with a Marine expeditionary unit \u2014 a crisis-response force that travels aboard three amphibious ships \u2014 the Corps wants to make sure it would have enough spare components and repair capability left in the United States, according to Fleeger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we don\u2019t want to do is we don\u2019t want to send aircraft forward and then have a deficit at home,\u201d Fleeger said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps has tweaked its deployment timeline for the King Stallion before: Back in 2022, the service said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/News-Display\/Article\/3010851\/marine-corps-declares-ioc-for-ch-53k-king-stallion\/\">it planned to deploy<\/a> the helicopter in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sea services tout the King Stallion as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navair.navy.mil\/product\/CH-53K-King-Stallion\">the most powerful helicopter<\/a> in the U.S. military.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/11\/29\/how-marines-sailors-mules-and-a-king-stallion-recovered-a-downed-helo\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Seahawk.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">How Marines, sailors, mules and a King Stallion recovered a downed helo<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Navy helicopter had been attempting to recover a civilian hiker with a broken ankle in California on Sept. 30 when it experienced a hard landing.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A replacement for the aging CH-53E Super Stallion, the King Stallion can haul armored vehicles or other heavy equipment over long stretches of land and sea. The service predicts the King Stallion would be especially useful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/News-Display\/Article\/3010851\/marine-corps-declares-ioc-for-ch-53k-king-stallion\/\">in providing logistics support<\/a> to Marines who are spread out on and near shore in the Indo-Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sikorsky, the Lockheed Martin subsidiary that manufactures the helicopter, has delivered 14 King Stallions to the Marine Corps and has 79 total on contract, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/mideast-africa\/2021\/02\/25\/israel-chooses-to-buy-lockheeds-ch-53k-over-boeings-ch-53\/\">12 for Israel<\/a>, according to Andrea Ulery, program manager for the aircraft at the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The King Stallion won\u2019t reach full operational capability until 2029, according to Fleeger, but the helicopter already has shown off its power in domestic missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 2021, Marines used a King Stallion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navair.navy.mil\/news\/CH-53K-King-Stallion-logs-first-successful-fleet-mission\/Wed-09082021-2033\">to recover a Navy MH-60S Seahawk<\/a> that had experienced a hard landing in California\u2019s White Mountains. It was d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu all over again in October 2023, when Marines once again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/11\/29\/how-marines-sailors-mules-and-a-king-stallion-recovered-a-downed-helo\/\">used a King Stallion to recover a downed
