It slowed supply chains, shuttered businesses, delayed military drills, upended government budgets and further inflamed Sino-U.S. relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/outlook\/\" target=_blank>Outlook project<\/a>, our authors were, understandably, unable to ignore this worldwide event. But the spread of a disease did not distract them from geopolitical affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO allies and partners are focused on military interoperability and adding to their arsenal to deter Russian aggression. Russia is responding by prioritizing self-sufficiency within its defense industry as a means of modernizing its forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, China and the U.S. continue their trade war \u2014 a concern for some Asia-Pacific nations that want to avoid taking sides should conflict break out, and would rather see the two economic powerhouses work together to tackle climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From industry\u2019s perspective, a post-pandemic world must involve financial support from government if businesses are to survive and new jobs created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brazil\u2019s Embraer and South Africa\u2019s Paramount Group emphasized in their essays that the defense industry is not only a means by which militaries can grow in strength; rather, these businesses provide scientific and technological advancements that can benefit the civilian world and help humankind fight a common enemy \u2014 perhaps the next pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what can we predict for 2021? Will relations between traditional adversaries improve, as we\u2019ve recently seen with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/mideast-africa\/2020\/08\/26\/what-kind-of-industrial-cooperation-will-improved-israel-uae-relations-produce\/\" target=_blank>Israel and its Arab neighbors<\/a>? Or is the proliferation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/cyber\/\" target=_blank>cyber weapons<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/information-warfare\/\" target=_blank>disinformation campaigns<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/\" target=_blank>unmanned technology<\/a> a sign of more trouble to come?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps NATO\u2019s secretary general put it best: \u201cThe only thing we can be certain of is uncertainty itself.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year&#8217;s Outlook authors were, understandably, unable to ignore the coronavirus pandemic.
