{"id":53571,"date":"2021-02-04T21:05:51","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T21:05:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/02\/04\/air-forces-golden-horde-swarming-munitions-program-to-get-a-second-chance-this-month\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:59:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:59:23","slug":"air-forces-golden-horde-swarming-munitions-program-to-get-a-second-chance-this-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2021\/02\/04\/air-forces-golden-horde-swarming-munitions-program-to-get-a-second-chance-this-month\/","title":{"rendered":"US Air Force\u2019s \u2018Golden Horde\u2019 swarming munitions program to get second chance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Now that the U.S. Air Force\u2019s first test of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2020\/07\/13\/air-force-gearing-up-for-first-flight-test-of-golden-horde-munition-swarms\/\" target=_blank>\u201cGolden Horde\u201d <\/a>swarming bombs was deemed a partial success, the service is giving the technology a second shot later this month, the commander of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2019\/04\/17\/these-are-the-five-areas-where-the-air-force-wants-to-see-an-explosion-of-technology\/\" target=_blank>Air Force Research Laboratory<\/a> said Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Golden Horde program is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/air-force-association\/2019\/09\/26\/months-after-release-of-new-tech-strategy-us-air-force-is-still-deliberating-a-path-forward\/\" target=_blank>one of AFRL\u2019s three top priorities<\/a>. The effort involves networking a swarm of munitions together and equipping them with an operational playbook, which gives them a set of predetermined rules for autonomous operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force conducted its first Golden Horde test Dec. 15. AFRL Commander Brig. Gen. Heather Pringle characterized that event as a \u201cgreat learning opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to two more flights this month, in fact, with four Collaborative Small Diameter Bomb weapons, and I\u2019m looking at time on target to try to up the game a little bit,\u201d Pringle said during a Feb. 4 event hosted by the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies. \u201cThis program is still progressing, and we\u2019re really excited about where it\u2019s going in 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the program met nine of 13 objectives during the December event, Pringle acknowledged that not everything in the first test went according to plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the flight, an F-16 dropped two Collaborative Small Diameter Bombs, or CSDB, a version of Boeing\u2019s laser-guided Small Diameter Bomb I upgraded with a collaborative autonomy payload. According to an Air Force news release, the bombs were able to establish communication links with each other and detected an initial target \u2014 a GPS jammer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the munitions are designed with an autonomy module that allows them to respond to changes on the battlefield, and the bombs sighted two higher-priority targets, which had been determined by Air Force mission planners before the flight and programmed into the weapons\u2019 rules of engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, due to software issues, the swarm was unable to transmit guidance commands to the navigation system, and the weapons struck a fail-safe target location instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe had uploaded an [operational flight plan] that couldn\u2019t accept updated flight profile information from the autonomous onboard processor. And so ultimately the initial flight profile that was in it is where it ended up,\u201d Pringle explained. \u201cThere was no update, and the flight never changed. But we have done the forensics on it, we\u2019ve corrected what needed to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the setbacks during the first test, the Golden Horde concept still shows promise, Pringle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next week, she intends to meet with Brig. Gen. Heath Collins, the Air Force\u2019s program executive for weapons, to discuss the future of the program and how to eventually turn the technology into a product that can be used operationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGen. Collins and I have been reassessing what the overall, long-term scope is of this program and what the end deliverable will be,\u201d Pringle said. \u201cA major component of that is building a digital architecture that will allow more testing of various kinds of collaborative technologies and building in some containerized solutions that could be more plug and play across weapons. And I think ultimately that will allow a lot more flexibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with the CSDB, the Air Force is creating a second swarming munition under the Golden Horde program \u2014 the Collaborative Miniature Air-Launched Decoy, based on Raytheon\u2019s Miniature Air-Launched Decoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Col. Garry Hasse, director of AFRL\u2019s Munitions Directorate, told Defense News last year that the CMALD would be ready for its flight tests onboard a B-52 aircraft in the summer of 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFRL plans to use the two systems together in an integrated swarm during a more complex scenario, currently scheduled around 2022, Norma Taylor, the program manager for Golden Horde, said during an interview in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The integration of hardware and software on the Golden Horde program is performed by Scientific Applications and Research Associates \u2014 which won a $100 million contract in 2019 for CSDB-1 \u2014 and Georgia Tech Applied Research Corporation \u2014 which won $85 million for
