{"id":55051,"date":"2018-07-14T09:09:23","date_gmt":"2018-07-14T09:09:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/07\/14\/saab-readies-to-offer-airborne-early-warning-plane-to-uk\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:05:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:05:23","slug":"saab-readies-to-offer-airborne-early-warning-plane-to-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/riat\/2018\/07\/14\/saab-readies-to-offer-airborne-early-warning-plane-to-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Saab readies to offer airborne early warning plane to UK"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RAF FAIRFORD, England \u2014 Saab is considering proposing an alternative to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/home\/2015\/02\/25\/raaf-details-wedgetail-s-recent-upgrade\/\" target=_blank>Boeing\u2019s 737 Wedgetail<\/a> for the United Kingdom\u2019s future airborne early warning aircraft, but it isn\u2019t ready to say which plane it will choose to host its radar if a program goes forward, the Swedish company\u2019s top executive confirmed to Defense News on July 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are working with partners and others to try to find a solution,\u201d Saab CEO H\u00e5kan Buskhe said during an interview at the Royal International Air Tattoo. \u201cWe are confident that we have a good system. \u2026 We are good in integration and could deliver according to time [constraints], probably much more affordably with better technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense News was the first to report that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2018\/07\/06\/airbus-and-saab-consider-challenge-to-boeing-wedgetail-for-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Saab and Airbus specifically had discussed a partnership<\/a> that would bring together Saab\u2019s Erieye radar and an Airbus aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/riat\/\" target=_blank><b>Read more from the 2018 Royal International Tattoo here!<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buskhe declined to confirm whether the company was in talks with Airbus, instead saying more broadly that it was speaking to a number of platform providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFirst of all our sensors and our system integration is fantastic. In June, the Times newspaper reported that the U.K. government preferred to sole source the Wedgetail from Boeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One member of Parliament \u2014 Julian Lewis, who heads its Defence Committee \u2014 wrote an open letter to British Defence Procurement Minister Guto Bebb, urging the Ministry of Defence to open a wider competition, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2017\/10\/08\/canadian-us-super-hornet-dispute-could-spark-trade-war\/\" target=_blank>Boeing\u2019s 2017 pursuit of tariffs against Bombardier<\/a> that would have hurt a plant in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, on July 12, <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/uk-britain-arms-boeing\/uk-nears-decision-to-buy-boeing-awacs-planes-sources-idUKKBN1K230F\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters reported<\/a> that the MoD still leaned toward the sole-source plan and intended to award Boeing a contract for four to six Wedgetail aircraft in the coming weeks, valued at an estimated $1 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the United Kingdom does end up sole sourcing the Wedgetail, Buskhe said, Saab would \u201crespect the government\u2019s decision\u201d and look for other potential
