{"id":57971,"date":"2019-02-26T18:50:41","date_gmt":"2019-02-26T18:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/02\/26\/boeing-pushes-t-x-trainer-complementary-simulators-at-australian-air-show\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:15:57","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:15:57","slug":"boeing-pushes-t-x-trainer-complementary-simulators-at-australian-air-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/avalon\/2019\/02\/26\/boeing-pushes-t-x-trainer-complementary-simulators-at-australian-air-show\/","title":{"rendered":"Boeing pushes T-X trainer, complementary simulators at Australian air show"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MELBOURNE, Australia \u2014 Boeing is promoting its T-X advanced trainer and its associated training system at the Avalon Airshow in Australia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/opinion\/2018\/11\/12\/boeing-and-the-art-of-capitalism\/\" target=\"_blank\">positioning itself for a possible opportunity there<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to reporters at the show, Boeing\u2019s vice president of international sales for strike, surveillance and mobility, Thom Breckenridge, emphasized the holistic training system that includes ground-based training and support offered by the company, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/idex\/2019\/02\/19\/boeings-t-x-could-be-coming-to-the-middle-east-and-not-just-as-a-trainer\/\" target=\"_blank\">its T-X aircraft<\/a> being a part of the whole system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These included leveraging on improvements in technology such as the visual acuity of simulators, with Breckenridge noting that training will be more effective with the pilot \u201coptimizing the time spent in a ground-based trainer versus in a jet later on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also stressed that the aircraft is being designed with the maintainer in mind, citing the sideways-opening canopy, which allows for removal and installation of the aircraft\u2019s ejection seats without the need to remove the whole canopy, thus eliminating the need to ensure the cockpit is properly sealed following canopy fitment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked about Australia as a potential market, Breckenridge said \u201cthere is no specific RFP yet, but we do understand there is a requirement and we\u2019ve had discussions with the RAAF,\u201d calling it \u201cearly days,\u201d although Boeing is confident it can meet its timeline and requirements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The RAAF, or Royal Australian Air Force, currently operates a fleet of 33 BAE Systems Hawk 127 lead-in fighter trainers. These aircraft have a secondary weapons delivery capability. When asked about the possibility of arming the T-X aircraft, Breckenridge said the growth option is was built in as part of the design, although the company is currently focused on fulfilling its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2018\/09\/27\/reuters-air-force-awards-9b-contract-to-boeing-for-next-training-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\">contract with the U.S. Air Force<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia\u2019s 2016 Defence White Paper had flagged a program to replace its existing lead-in fighter training system expected to begin from 2022 until the end of the next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Air Commodore Mike Kitcher, commander of the RAAF\u2019s Air Combat Group, noted at a separate event during the show that with the last Hawk about to be delivered to the RAAF following a capability upgrade to train fast-jet pilots on fifth-generation fighters, the type will continue to serve in the service until at least the end of the decade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 2018, the U.S. Air Force announced that Boeing had won the service\u2019s competition for a new advanced
