{"id":66806,"date":"2024-03-29T14:15:37","date_gmt":"2024-03-29T14:15:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2024\/03\/29\/argentina-to-buy-surplus-f-16-jets-from-denmark\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:06:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:06:48","slug":"argentina-to-buy-surplus-f-16-jets-from-denmark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2024\/03\/29\/argentina-to-buy-surplus-f-16-jets-from-denmark\/","title":{"rendered":"Argentina to buy surplus F-16 jets from Denmark"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SANTIAGO, Chile \u2014 Argentina has signed an agreement to buy 24 surplus F-16 fighter jets from Denmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Denmark is replacing its F-16 fleet with new F-35 jets, both of which are made by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/mideast-africa\/2020\/04\/22\/lockheed-looking-to-sell-additional-f-16s-to-customers-in-africa-south-america\/\" target=\"_blank\">American company Lockheed Martin<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Argentine Defense Minister Luis Petri and his Danish counterpart Troels Lund Poulsen signed a letter of intent for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/09\/21\/argentina-eyes-664-million-for-fighter-jets\/\" target=\"_blank\">the sale<\/a> in Buenos Aires on March 26. The U.S. ambassador to Argentina, Marc Stanley, attended the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDenmark is donating 19 F-16 jets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">to Ukraine<\/a>, and the government has decided to sell 24 Danish F-16 jets to Argentina,\u201d Lund Poulsen said in a statement, describing the transaction as a \u201cpossible sale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe decision to sell the Danish jets to Argentina has been carried out in close collaboration with the American government, who has approved the sale of the US produced aircrafts,\u201d the Danish Defence Ministry noted in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local military sources in Buenos Aires, speaking to Defense News on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of military deals, said Argentina will pay $320 million for the acquisition. They also said banks and the U.S. will provide loans to help finance the deal, which not only includes the aircraft but also weapon systems and other equipment made by U.S. businesses. Denmark is also set to provide simulators and a spares. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those sources added that the final contract will be signed by the end of April in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency will manage the sale and transfer of weapon systems such as AIM-120 advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles, under the Pentagon\u2019s Foreign Military Sales program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Denmark\u2019s Acquisition and Logistics Organisation will handle the transfer of surplus F-16s, while the Argentine military\u2019s logistics directorate will surpervise the procurement process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Negotiations for the deal, which began under Argentina\u2019s previous government led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/12\/12\/argentinas-president-throws-cold-water-on-fighter-jet-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">then-President Alberto Fernandez<\/a>, also considered the procurement of newly built <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/06\/24\/having-visited-pakistan-and-china-is-argentina-ready-to-buy-the-jf-17-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chinese\/Pakistani-made JF-17 fighter jets<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The potential acquisition of the JF-17 was rejected over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/the-americas\/2021\/09\/28\/could-britain-stop-argentina-from-buying-the-jf-17-warplane\/\" target=\"_blank\">concerns<\/a> it could jeopardize relations
