But after the campaigns end and the last ballot is cast, how much will it matter? When it comes right down to it, how effective is government at actually changing people\u2019s daily lives?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new nationwide survey by Bentley University and Gallup finds that only 39% of people believe the federal government is effective at impacting people\u2019s lives in a positive way.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2023\/11\/06\/is-election-day-a-federal-holiday\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-621785008.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Is Election Day a federal holiday?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">More than a third of states have some form of Election Day holiday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there\u2019s a huge difference depending on which party you belong to: 57% of Democrats believe the federal government is effective at improving people\u2019s lives, compared to only 24% of Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&#038;l=en&#038;o=3690340-1&#038;h=2681724507&#038;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bentley.edu%2Fgallup&#038;a=Bentley-Gallup+Force+for+Good+Survey\">Bentley-Gallup Force for Good Survey<\/a> of 5,757 U.S. adults also found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 People who identify as Black are much more likely to believe the federal government can make a difference. 62 percent of Black people say the federal government is effective at impacting people\u2019s lives, compared to 33 percent of white people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 Older people are most likely to believe in the federal government\u2019s effectiveness. Among those over age 70, 44 percent say the federal government is effective at impacting people\u2019s lives, followed by those aged 18 to 29 (42 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 People aged 50 to 59 had the least faith in Washington, with only 34 percent believing that the federal government is effective at impacting people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 75% of Democrats say companies should speak out on current events but Republicans overwhelmingly say they should stick to business. Only 18% of Republicans say businesses should give their opinion on stories in the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDemocrats see corporate executives as allies in recent social conflicts, but they should be careful what they wish for,\u201d said Jeff Moriarty, professor of Philosophy at Bentley. \u201cEventually they will find themselves on opposing sides of an issue, and then encouraging corporations to get more involved in politics will seem like a bad idea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So if Americans are skeptical of Washington, who do they think should step in?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">57% of people think businesses are effective at improving people\u2019s lives, the Bentley-Gallup poll found. Republicans believe businesses make a positive impact more than Democrats do &#8212; 72% of Republicans say businesses are effective at making a positive impact, compared to 51% of Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/home\/2022\/06\/08\/democrats-and-republicans-agree-government-does-too-little-on-certain-issues\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Cap.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Democrats and Republicans agree: government must do more<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Pew Research Center report revealed several benchmarks of public opinion on government efficacy, including the federal response to certain issues and views on politicians. One finding set the tone: \u201cJust 20% say they trust the government in Washington to do the right thing just about always or most of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference in people\u2019s trust in government compared to business highlights a growing trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe role of business in our society is evolving. People expect more from companies than simply increasing profits and meeting shareholder goals,\u201d said Bentley <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&#038;l=en&#038;o=3690340-1&#038;h=2034845374&#038;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bentley.edu%2Fabout%2Fpresident%2Fmeet-president-1&#038;a=President+E.+LaBrent+Chrite\">President E. LaBrent Chrite<\/a>, in a statement. \u201cAs people\u2019s expectations expand and businesses change to meet them, businesses themselves will have a larger role in our society \u2013 everything from how we debate political ideas to how we treat the poorest among us. The impact of business in our society has never been more important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Survey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bentley University \u2013 Gallup <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&#038;l=en&#038;o=3690340-1&#038;h=2251325265&#038;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bentley.edu%2Fgallup&#038;a=Force+for+Good+Report\">Force for Good Report<\/a> is based on a Gallup Panel web survey completed by 5,757 adults, aged 18 and older, conducted June 8 to 19, 2022. The Gallup Panel is a probability-based longitudinal panel of U.S. adults whom Gallup selects using random-digit-dial phone interviews that cover landline and cell phones. Gallup also uses address-based sampling methods to recruit panel members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sample for this survey was weighted to be demographically representative of the U.S. adult population, using the most recent Current Population Survey figures.
