(AP) \u2014 One of five workers accused of sexually abusing inmates at a federal women\u2019s prison in California pleaded guilty on Thursday, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enrique Chavez entered a plea to one count of abusive sexual contact with a prisoner at the Federal Correctional Institute, Dublin in the San Francisco Bay Area. Federal prosecutors said Chavez, 50, was a food service foreman there two years ago when he locked the door to the pantry and fondled an inmate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bureau of Prisons has been under <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/prisons-jon-ossoff-treatment-of-prisoners-congress-government-and-politics-e4c2267fd47e77a8520fb517ebe93fc0\">increasing scrutiny<\/a> from Congress amid myriad crises, many of them <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/covid-health-crime-prisons-only-on-ap-c7a1cfc4aee226570c375fc015ee322f\">exposed by AP reporting<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-pandemic-health-california-united-states-prisons-00a711766f5f3d2bd3fe6402af1e0ff8\">rampant sexual abuse of inmates<\/a> by staff and other <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/covid-health-crime-prisons-only-on-ap-c7a1cfc4aee226570c375fc015ee322f\">staff criminal conduct<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/covid-health-crime-prisons-only-on-ap-c7a1cfc4aee226570c375fc015ee322f\">chronic understaffing<\/a> hampering <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/covid-health-crime-prisons-only-on-ap-c7a1cfc4aee226570c375fc015ee322f\">emergency responses<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/covid-health-crime-prisons-only-on-ap-c7a1cfc4aee226570c375fc015ee322f\">escapes<\/a> and deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe public trusts correctional officers to act with integrity, but instead, Chavez used his position of power to sexually abuse an inmate under his supervision,\u201d said a statement from Zachary Shroyer, special agent in charge of the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chavez could face up to two years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced on Feb. 2, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice. He\u2019s the fifth employee at the Dublin prison to be charged with sexual abuse of inmates since June 2021. Others include the prison\u2019s former warden and a chaplain. Chavez is the third to have pleaded guilty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former chaplain, James Theodore Highhouse, was <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-prisons-chaplain-abused-inmates-dfd76afcae114b3ef8430bb4eff05ce8\">sentenced<\/a> in August to seven years in prison \u2014 more than double the recommended punishment in federal sentencing guidelines. Ross Klinger, a recycling technician, pleaded guilty in February but has yet to be sentenced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former warden, Ray J. Garcia, has pleaded not guilty to abusing three women. He is scheduled to go on trial in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, an AP investigation revealed years of sexual misconduct at FCI Dublin. The AP also detailed steps that were taken to keep abuse secret, such as ignoring allegations, retaliating against whistleblowers and sending prisoners to solitary confinement or other prisons for
