His rivals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/first-amendment\/article\/1184\/federalists\" target=\"_blank\">the Federalists<\/a>, founded by Alexander Hamilton, used his stance on the separation of church and state as a political weapon to try and convince Americans that he was an atheist who was making America less godly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With no fixed date, subsequent presidents proclaimed Thanksgiving in other months, if they did it at all. President James Madison <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn84024014\/1813-07-30\/ed-1\/seq-2\/#date1=1809&#038;index=11&#038;rows=20&#038;searchType=advanced&#038;language=&#038;sequence=0&#038;words=MADISON+PROCLAMATION+Proclamation+thanksgiving&#038;proxdistance=5&#038;date2=1817&#038;ortext=&#038;proxtext=&#038;phrasetext=&#038;andtext=madison+thanksgiving+proclamation+&#038;dateFilterType=yearRange&#038;page=1&#038;loclr=blogser\">proclaimed Sept. 9 as the date in 1813<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn83025561\/1815-03-08\/ed-1\/seq-4\/#date1=1809&#038;index=0&#038;rows=20&#038;searchType=advanced&#038;language=&#038;sequence=0&#038;words=MADISON+Proclamation+PROCLAMATION+thanksgiving+Thanksgiving&#038;proxdistance=5&#038;date2=1817&#038;ortext=&#038;proxtext=&#038;phrasetext=&#038;andtext=madison+thanksgiving+proclamation+&#038;dateFilterType=yearRange&#038;page=1&#038;loclr=blogser\"> March 16 in 1815<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between 1846-1863, Sarah Josepha Hale, a pioneering influencer and editor of <a href=\"https:\/\/lccn.loc.gov\/sf88093338?loclr=blogser\"><i>Godey\u2019s Lady\u2019s Book<\/i><\/a>, petitioned Congress and five different presidents (<a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/77618337\/1940-11-18\/ed-1\/seq-7\/?loclr=blogser\">Taylor, Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan and Lincoln<\/a>) to create a national annual holiday for Thanksgiving. She finally had success when in 1863 President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday on the last Thursday in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FDR\u2019s turkey day trouble<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn96060774\/1933-03-04\/ed-1\/seq-1\/?loclr=blogser\">Franklin Roosevelt first became president<\/a> in 1933, Thanksgiving was still not a fixed holiday. His first Thanksgiving in office fell on Nov. 30, leaving only about 20 shopping days left before Christmas (almost all stores closed on Sundays at that time, kids).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, most people waited to start their holiday shopping until after Thanksgiving, and business leaders feared they would lose crucial revenue that an extra week would bring. They urged Roosevelt to move the holiday up a week to Thursday, Nov. 23. He demurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1939, however, with the country still recovering from the Great Depression and Thanksgiving again set to fall on the last day of November, Roosevelt agreed to move the date up a week to Nov. 23. J. Res. 41) in 1941, making the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/legislative\/features\/thanksgiving\">fourth Thursday in November a legal holiday<\/a>, ensuring that all Americans would celebrate a unified Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do presidents \u2018pardon\u2019 turkeys?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1947, President Harry S. Truman presided over the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn78002169\/1947-12-16\/ed-1\/seq-1\/#date1=1947&#038;index=0&#038;rows=20&#038;searchType=advanced&#038;language=&#038;sequence=0&#038;words=Board+egg+National+Poultry+Thanksgiving+Truman+TRUMAN&#038;proxdistance=5&#038;date2=1948&#038;ortext=&#038;proxtext=&#038;phrasetext=Poultry+and+Egg+National+Board&#038;andtext=Thanksgiving+Truman&#038;dateFilterType=yearRange&#038;page=1&#038;loclr=blogser\">first live turkey ceremony<\/a> by the Poultry and Egg National Board and the event established an annual tradition at the White House. Originally, the birds presented were intended for the Thanksgiving meal. Birds given to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1960s had signs around their necks that read \u201cGood Eating Mr. President.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Kennedy spared the life of his turkey in 1963, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/fedlife\/2022\/11\/21\/why-do-us-presidents-pardon-turkeys-at-thanksgiving\/\" target=\"_blank\">tradition of pardoning White House turkeys <\/a>can be traced back to Lincoln\u2019s granting clemency to a bird <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn85047084\/1903-08-18\/ed-1\/seq-1\/#date1=1777&#038;index=3&#038;rows=20&#038;searchType=advanced&#038;language=&#038;sequence=0&#038;words=Brooks+BROOKS+Noah+NOAH&#038;proxdistance=5&#038;date2=1963&#038;ortext=&#038;proxtext=&#038;phrasetext=noah+brooks&#038;andtext=&#038;dateFilterType=yearRange&#038;page=1&#038;loclr=blogser\" target=\"_blank\">a century before<\/a>, according to the Library of Congress. The three-hour parade famously features celebrities on floats, marching bands and colossal balloons in the shape of Warner Bros.
