{"id":27397,"date":"2024-01-16T14:17:54","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T14:17:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/01\/16\/federal-offices-in-dc-area-closed-due-to-snowstorm\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:18:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:18:03","slug":"federal-offices-in-dc-area-closed-due-to-snowstorm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/management\/career-management\/2024\/01\/16\/federal-offices-in-dc-area-closed-due-to-snowstorm\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal offices in DC area closed due to snowstorm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Update: As of Wednesday, Jan. 17, OPM said federal offices reopened with the option of unscheduled leave or telework.  <\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal workers got a snow day on Tuesday after offices closed in Washington, D.C. due to a holiday weekend dump of snow and below-freezing temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Office of Personnel Management, which monitors offices\u2019 operating status in the event of severe weather, notified government employees in the National Capital Region late Monday that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/policy-data-oversight\/pay-leave\/reference-materials\/handbooks\/dcdismissal.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">maximum telework is in effect<\/a> to keep workers off the roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employees who telework or work fully remotely are expected to continue going so and generally do not receive weather and safety leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employees who don\u2019t usually telework will be granted leave for their normal work hours. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2024\/01\/15\/lawmakers-scramble-for-solutions-with-shutdown-deadline-just-days-away\/\" target=\"_blank\">slew of Congressional hearings <\/a>are still on track for this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The winter storm that impacted much of the mid-Atlantic region over the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend is petering out, but forecasters expect potentially single-digit temperatures overnight Tuesday and more snowfall come Friday. It was the first time in nearly two years that all three D.C.-area airports received at least an inch of snow, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/showsigwx.php?warnzone=DCZ001&#038;warncounty=DCC001&#038;firewxzone=DCZ001&#038;local_place1=Washington%20DC&#038;product1=Winter+Storm+Warning&#038;lat=38.9&#038;lon=-77.0167\" target=\"_blank\">National Weather Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The storm warning is in effect until 10 a.m. ET on Jan. 16 for central Maryland, the District of Columbia and northern Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be advised that roads could refreeze into early Wednesday morning if slush and snow on the ground melts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether federal offices will be closed again is uncertain. Employees can get updates from OPM by visiting the website or downloading the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/policy-data-oversight\/snow-dismissal-procedures\/mobile-app\">OPM Alert Mobile App<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>This is a developing story.
