Biden and Jake Sullivan, the president\u2019s national security adviser, were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2024\/01\/07\/defense-secretary-lloyd-austin-remains-hospitalized-sunday\/\" target=\"_blank\">not aware of Austin\u2019s condition until Thursday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon has refused to offer details about Austin\u2019s initial medical procedure on Dec. 22 and what prompted him to be admitted into intensive care at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on New Year\u2019s Day. Austin has resumed his duties after deferring to a deputy, although he remains hospitalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kirby, speaking to reporters on Air Force One as Biden traveled to South Carolina, said there is an \u201cexpectation\u201d among members of Biden\u2019s Cabinet that if one becomes hospitalized, \u201cthat will be notified up the chain of command.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, White House officials on Monday emphasized that Austin continues to retain Biden\u2019s confidence. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden appreciated Austin\u2019s statement on Saturday, in which he took responsibility about the lack of transparency on his hospitalization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no plan for anything other than for Secretary Austin to stay in the job and continue the leadership that he\u2019s been
