{"id":33963,"date":"2023-10-23T21:36:12","date_gmt":"2023-10-23T21:36:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/10\/23\/state-clears-uks-planned-1b-buy-of-joint-air-to-ground-missile\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T20:53:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T20:53:48","slug":"state-clears-uks-planned-1b-buy-of-joint-air-to-ground-missile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2023\/10\/23\/state-clears-uks-planned-1b-buy-of-joint-air-to-ground-missile\/","title":{"rendered":"US State Dept. clears UK\u2019s $1B purchase of Joint Air-to-Ground Missile"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. State Department has approved a potential $957.4 million sale of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/10\/11\/after-delay-joint-air-to-ground-missile-full-rate-production-decision-now-due-in-mid-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles<\/a> to the United Kingdom, according to a Defense Security Cooperation Agency announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.K. intends to buy 3,000 Lockheed Martin-developed JAGMs \u2014 or AGM-197A missiles \u2014 the announcement states. It notes Congress must now approve the sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Army and the Marine Corps in August 2022 declared JAGM ready for full-rate production. The services had delayed the missile\u2019s fielding by more than a year after the weapon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/02\/27\/army-and-marines-working-to-improve-hellfire-replacements-lethality-in-maritime-environment\/\" target=\"_blank\">previously failed to achieve desired lethal effects <\/a>on a maritime target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JAGM will replace Lockheed-made Hellfire missiles aboard American aircraft and will first be fielded on AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and Marine Corps AH-1Z Viper helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Army and the Marine Corps are the first adopters of the capability,<b> <\/b>the U.K. in 2021 signed on to purchase JAGM. In the last year, Poland and the Netherlands have both announced plans to buy JAGM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin has been working on upgrading JAGM. The company announced in December 2022 it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2022\/12\/29\/lockheed-doubles-joint-air-to-ground-missile-range-in-flight-test\/\" target=\"_blank\">had conducted a flight test of a version <\/a>with double the range,<b> <\/b>traveling 16 kilometers at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company also incorporated a tri-mode seeker that pairs a low-cost imaging sensor with the seeker\u2019s semi-active laser and millimeter wave sensors. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/home\/2015\/08\/04\/lockheed-locks-down-us-army-jagm-development-contract\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Army originally required the JAGM weapon to have a tri-mode seeker<\/a>, but<b> <\/b>returned to a dual-mode seeker requirement when the price was too high. Since then, tri-mode seeker technology has become more affordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed also said in summer 2022 it was evaluating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/eurosatory\/2022\/06\/14\/lockheed-may-repurpose-its-joint-air-to-ground-missile-for-air-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\">how JAGM could be configured for mobile, short-range air defense <\/a>launched from ground platforms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UK is one step closer to adding Joint Air-to-Ground
