Col. Jayde Sharp didn\u2019t know what to expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharp had deployed to Hamid Karzai International Airport with the 183rd Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, a unit belonging to the 172nd Airlift Wing of the Mississippi Air National Guard. He was there to assist with the U.S. withdrawal after decades of conflict, a pullout that was becoming more unhinged and chaotic by the hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an aeromedical evacuation officer, Sharp arrived expecting to treat sprains, heat exhaustion or even a local\u2019s pregnancy as desperate Afghans thronged the airport where U.S. troops were struggling to maintain order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharp soon felt the tension hanging in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight days later, on Aug. 26, an ISIS-K suicide bomber detonated at the airport\u2019s Abbey Gate, killing 11 Marines, a soldier and a Navy corpsman, along with roughly 170 Afghans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMass cal\u2019 rang out over the intercom,\u201d Sharp told Military Times, using a shorthand for \u201cmass casualty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharp\u2019s mission changed in a flash. He leapt into action, helping to evacuate 38 badly injured civilians and fellow service members.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/08\/30\/46-hours-how-airmen-fought-to-save-lives-after-the-abbey-gate-bombing\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21238362925468.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">46 hours: How airmen fought to save lives after the Abbey Gate bombing<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Air Force Times exclusively spoke with five airmen from the 379th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron during Operation Allies Refuge.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For his actions during the chaotic evacuation, Sharp received the Bronze Star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHis remarkable performance and selfless commitment to his fellow comrades-in-arms and the local populace saved countless lives,\u201d according to the award citation, which was presented to Sharp this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flight nurses like Sharp do not typically provide medical care on the ground. When the explosion rang out, he left the safety of his medical facility to treat and triage casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharp\u2019s efforts saved the lives of multiple Marines, including one whose carotid artery was severed after being shot in the face and neck, according to the citation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharp provided medical attention while exposing himself to the threat of additional attacks as well, the citation said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the airport medical facility, Sharp witnessed the 13 deceased troops come through the door. Large crowds were suddenly intolerable. Each day was spent living on a short fuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t just the chaos and lives lost, he said, but fearing for his own life as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat bothered me the most was the emotional part of [thinking] this could be the end,\u201d Sharp said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The threat level was so high on the day of the Abbey Gate bombing that at one point Sharp\u2019s superior walked by and told everyone, \u201cIf you\u2019re not right with the lord, you need to get right,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In those moments, Sharp wondered how his family would be able to deal with his passing. How would his wife, kids and grandkids handle life without him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such thoughts had to be set aside at times, like when he treated an Afghan boy he said must have been his grandson\u2019s age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have a grandson that\u2019s four years old now and when that baby came up it reminded me so much of my grandson,\u201d he said. \u201cJust the haircut and the size.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharp and his team performed CPR on the child, resuscitated him and put him on a ventilator. The boy was evacuated but later died of a brain bleed, Sharp said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s an image that still haunts him. Service members make decisions to put themselves in harm\u2019s way, he said, but the child did not have a choice. The boy\u2019s parents were desperately trying to get him to a country where he could live a better life. It\u2019s been three years, but he says he is only just now returning to some semblance of normality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no way to train for that experience, he said. Carlos Mendoza and Staff Sgt. Morgan Reed received the medals Nov. 9.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the aftermath of the attack, Sharp received a box with 50 units of blood. His team was critically low on supply. It was delivered from Ramstein Air Base, Germany, he said, and the chief nurse there was a forward-deployed member he knew from the 183rd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharp, who is a lover of Mexican food, opened the box to find a Mexican food MRE sitting on top with his name written across it in Sharpie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The small gesture amid the horror brought a smile to his face. Curious colleagues inquired about the package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ll tell you later,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they went back
