{"id":40615,"date":"2019-03-11T15:23:53","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T15:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/03\/11\/6-crucial-job-search-tips-from-vets-for-vets\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:23:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:23:46","slug":"6-crucial-job-search-tips-from-vets-for-vets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2019\/03\/11\/6-crucial-job-search-tips-from-vets-for-vets\/","title":{"rendered":"6 crucial job search tips \u2014 from vets, for vets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ever thought your military experience made you the perfect candidate for a job, only to apply and get nothing but radio silence on the other end?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trust me, you\u2019re not the first veteran to go through that, and you won\u2019t be the last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some tips to help you make it through the job-search process without losing your mind, courtesy of five veterans who have been there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>1.<\/b> <b>Don\u2019t rest on your military experience. <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time Josh Horneck was 22, he had traveled the world, deployed to a combat zone, learned how to make decisions in life-altering situations and established friendships that will last a lifetime \u2014 all thanks to the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll of this uniquely prepared me to be successful in any career I chose,\u201d said Horneck, a former public affairs specialist in the Army Reserves and Michigan National Guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But those and other experiences don\u2019t neatly translate into a bulleted list on a resume, he said, and he found that most employers, even those claiming to be military friendly, didn\u2019t understand them anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe biggest help for me was to stop convincing myself that \u2018U.S. Army &#8211; 8 years\u2019 was going to land me a mid-level management job at a Fortune 500\u201d company, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nathan Hilt, who served from 1996 to 2000, said he was told by recruiters and college professors to list only his service dates on his resume \u2014 but nothing more unless it directly correlated to a specific job he was interested in. In his case, that wasn\u2019t much, since he was looking for a career more related to his microbiology degree than his Marine Corps infantry experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said he\u2019d advise other veterans to do the same, and strip things like military accolades from their resumes altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[You\u2019re] not applying to the military, and those won\u2019t mean as much as you think they do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And another thing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStop cussing and tone down your bravado. You might think being a shit-talking badass with confirmed kills is the pinnacle of the world, but it\u2019s not, and most of the world doesn\u2019t want that,\u201d Hilt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2019\/02\/05\/whats-the-no-1-thing-recruiters-look-for-on-a-resume\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RBC-opener-image-RESIZED.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">What\u2019s the No. 1 thing recruiters look for on a resume?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">If you look up \u201chow to write a resume,\u201d you\u2019ll get a bunch of links to blogs and how-to sites with all the latest tips and tricks for catching a recruiter\u2019s eye. We\u2019ve saved you a step.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>2.<\/b> <b>Treat job searching like a full-time job.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tailoring your resume and writing a cover letter for each job you\u2019re interested in takes time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFinding a job is a full-time job,\u201d said Army veteran Maureen Elias. \u201cTreat it as such. Set aside dedicated time for the work it takes \u2014 writing thank you notes, searching online, making calls, and networking. Keep a spreadsheet of contacts and follow up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Go to job fairs and do your research, she added. Be ready to give recruiters your resume and elevator pitch, and prepare for possible interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEnlist the aid of a mentor or multiple mentors,\u201d she said. \u201cI call mine my personal board of advisors. They can help you realize what you want to do, prepare you for the journey and support you as you begin the work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>3.<\/b> <b>Start early.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStart planning a year out,\u201d said Bridget Altenburg, a former Army captain who runs the Chicago-based nonprofit National Able Network that helps veterans and others find employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don\u2019t need to have everything nailed down before you get out, she said, but start figuring out where you\u2019re going to live, what school you might attend and what jobs or industries you\u2019re interested in. She recommends using resources, such as the Labor Department\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mynextmove.org\/vets\/\" target=_blank><u>My Next Move<\/u><\/a> website, to help you figure out what you want to do next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>4.<\/b> <b>Start networking &#8230; yesterday.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019d advise those that are still in the military to <a href=\"https:\/\/rebootcamp.militarytimes.com\/news\/entrepreneurship\/2018\/03\/22\/need-help-networking-youre-not-alone\/\" target=\"_blank\">make as many connections as possible<\/a>,\u201d Horneck said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo it before you are unemployed. Develop a career passion and do everything you can to get your foot in the door \u2014 be it education, face-to-face meetings with people already in the field, online communities, friend-of-a-friend&#8217;s-dad&#8217;s-cousin interactions, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Horneck separated from the military in 2015, it took nearly two years for him to find a civilian job that matched his skills. He now works at a Denver-based consulting firm supporting crisis response and emergency preparedness training, a position he got based on a referral from an Army friend, he said. She, too, had joined the company based on a referral from another employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHad I not kept up with a connection I never imagined would give me a career, I may still be on the job hunt,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/newsletters\/daily-news-roundup\/2019\/03\/07\/should-vets-get-preference-for-promotions-in-government-jobs\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-485557812-RESIZED.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Should vets get preference for promotions in government jobs?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Federal law grants extra points to veterans applying for government jobs, but does not apply these points to promotions, transfers or other changes once a person is already employed. This U.S. territory did things differently.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most jobs are gotten this way \u2014 through networking versus blindly applying for jobs, Altenburg said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a hidden job search that\u2019s hard to tap into if you just wait to apply for job postings,\u201d she said. \u201cFigure out where you want to work, see who you know, and ask them to connect you to a decision maker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Altenburg said the best time to start making connections is yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhenever you meet someone professionally, connect to them on LinkedIn and via email,\u201d she said. \u201cKeep a list of who you know by location and industry so you can ask them to help you network. Join alumni and interest groups, and don\u2019t be shy about asking for help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>5.<\/b> <b>Take time for yourself \u2014 and others. <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHere is what I would tell someone who is getting out of the service: Take a proactive break,\u201d said Alberto Lopez, a Marine Corps veteran who separated in 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means taking time to \u201crecover\u201d from service, but in a way that will benefit you in the future, he said. For some, this could mean physically relaxing. For him, it meant volunteering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVolunteering allowed me to regroup from my service while researching and developing a plan for my future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it also looked good on a resume, filling in gaps that may have otherwise been red flags and demonstrating a passion for serving others, he said. Now, Lopez is the founder of Phenix Legacy, a nonprofit organization in Illinois that serves members of the military community and first responders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elias said it\u2019s also important to remember to take time for self-care during the job searching process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing told no is hard on the self-esteem,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>6.<\/b> <b>Don\u2019t give up.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you search for a job, remember that many a resume you send will go into oblivion, and you\u2019ll never receive a response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor every military transition poster child, there are 1,000 empty inboxes, waiting for even a rejection email,\u201d Horneck said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For 95 percent of the jobs he applied for, Horneck heard nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hilt had a similar experience. He applied to hundreds of jobs and never heard back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not ever give up,\u201d he said. \u201cYou might not get that job you wanted or an interview may have went dreadful.
