Norton Retzsch, 25, had been accounted for on April 1, 2025 \u2014 thanks, in part, to 20-year-old DNA submitted to the military in 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kim Opitz, Retzsch\u2019s great-niece, a freelance writer who lives in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, told Kare 11 News that her \u201cmother never, never let us forget about him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retzsch, a member of Company C, 1st Marine Raider Battalion, 1st Marine Raider Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Amphibious Corps, was first reported missing in action on July 9, 1943, during the Battle of Enogai on New Georgia in the Solomon Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New Georgia campaign, dubbed Operation Toenails, was led by Rear Adm. Richmond Turner, with amphibious forces landing at various points on New Georgia on June 30, 1943, beginning a campaign that lasted until the Japanese evacuated Vella Lavella on Oct. 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"783\" height=\"1080\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/260304-D-ZZ111-006.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-111075\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/260304-D-ZZ111-006.jpg.jpg 783w, https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/260304-D-ZZ111-006.jpg.jpg?resize=218,300 218w, https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/260304-D-ZZ111-006.jpg.jpg?resize=768,1059 768w, https:\/\/staging.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/260304-D-ZZ111-006.jpg.jpg?resize=742,1024 742w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 783px) 100vw, 783px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">To \u201cavenge\u201d her husband\u2019s death, Margaret Retzsch, who had married the Marine Raider just after his enlistment, joined Marine Corps Women\u2019s Reserve and was honorably discharged as a sergeant post-war. (USMC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On July 9, Company C came under intense Japanese fire as they rushed toward enemy positions. In his post-war account, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/315676\/bloody-ridge-and-beyond-by-marlin-groft-larry-alexander\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/315676\/bloody-ridge-and-beyond-by-marlin-groft-larry-alexander\/\">\u201cBloody Ridge and Beyond,\u201d<\/a> Marine Corps veteran Marlin Groft wrote, \u201cAll hell broke loose up front. C Company had blundered into a prepared killing field of Nambu machine gun nests, aided by snipers cleverly concealed in the surrounding trees.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retzsch was one of three Marines reported missing after the battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to DPAA, from November to December 1947, units from the 604th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company searched for Retzsch, but after conducting an unsuccessful search of the Bairoko Harbor and Enogai Inlet, the case was closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interred as an unknown at the Enogai Cemetery in 1943, Retzsch was then exhumed twice before final burial in Manila.<b> <\/b>The Marine\u2019s remains were subsequently designated X-182, while Retzsch\u2019s name was recorded on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2019, however, \u201cafter researching losses on New Georgia,\u201d according to DPAA, they \u201crecommended disinterment of several Unknowns potentially associated with losses in the Bairoko-Enogai area.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s where Opitz\u2019s DNA, submitted to the military in 2006, came into play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2025, DPAA, using dental and other DNA analysis, identified Retzsch\u2019s remains and contacted his great-niece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was like elation, like I\u2019ve never felt so spiritually high,\u201d Opitz told Kare 11 News. \u201cHe\u2019s going to be brought home with honors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retzsch will be buried on April 13, 2026, in Marana, Arizona.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pfc.
