Within three months, the military will have seen three new chief information officers.
First, at the Air Force Lt. Gen. Bradford Schwedo took over for Lt. Gen. Bill Bender as the CIO and chief of information dominance. Weeks later, Maj. Gen. Bruce Crawford assumed the role of Army CIO, filling the position after Lt. Gen. Robert Ferrell retired.
Now, completing the CIO trifecta, there is confirmation that Rob Foster, Department of the Navy CIO, is leaving as well.
Federal News Radio reports that Foster will be stepping down from his position as the DoN CIO and moving on to join the National Credit Union Administration as the deputy CIO, where he will take responsibility for the delivery of information technology services. His last day, according to a Navy spokeswoman, will be Aug. 19.
Since June 2015, Foster’s time as the DoN CIO has concentrated on priority efforts including modernizing the Navy and Marine Corps’ infrastructure and ensuring the department had enough qualified cyber employees. In addition, Foster announced the creation of the Data and Analytics Consortium initiative in July.
It remains unclear who will be taking over as acting DoN CIO once Foster leaves. Kelly Fletcher currently serves as principal deputy CIO.
