Ask Reg: Do I retain annual leave when I retire from federal service?

The following is a question submitted by a reader to Federal Times columnist Reg Jones, a charter member of the senior executive service and the resident expert on federal employee retirement issues.

A Fed Times reader asks:

“If I retired on Jan. 31, 2027, would I lose any annual leave from the previous year?”

Reg’s response:

You would only lose any hours of annual leave that exceeded the annual carry-over limit. For most employees that’s 240 hours.
